History Teacher

Terence Graham

I am the lead in Project North Star, principal writer and a Head of History in a secondary school in the Northeast. Writing most of our website I have learned about some amazing people. I want to share them and their stories with you.

I want the Northeast to shout about its history. I want all my students to know that we live in a diverse, amazing place.

It is a privilege and a joy to work on Project North Star. The projects draws together information and resources to make coherent and accessible materials that will be of benefit not only to schools but to the wider community. It is a great pleasure to be a small part of this.

Shabana Marshall

I teach at a university, and I also work in antiracist education. I have been supporting
Project North Star because I love history, especially when it helps us to understand
why Britain is a multicultural society. I am excited for you to learn more about the
northeast’s links to Black, British history!

I am a writer and English teacher from the Northeast. I believe that we should learn lessons from the stories of the past so that we can make our future better.

Head of History

Annie Harris

I'm a Head of History. I specialise in the Early Modern period, particularly the Tudors.  This is where my focus for the project has been, focusing on the presence of Black people within England and the North East.

The Principals

Project North Star is guided by excellent advisors, our own experience and our own wish to do this as well as we can.

Have a look at our Guiding Principals (Our North Star!)

The Name

Project North Star is named in honour of  Frederick Douglass, writer, speaker, abolitionist. His newspaper, the North Star, worked to end injustice. In this he was helped by people from our region and in particular by Julia Griffiths from Newcastle.

The Job

Project North Star wants to shout about Black history being British History.

Project North Star wants to shout about our region’s history being part of national and international history.

Project North Star wants to let you hear the voices of amazing people from the past and the present -  From our region and from far away.

Project North Star wants to listen and learn.

Project North Star wants to empower students of all backgrounds and teachers to do all of the above.

The Wish

We want our project, Project North Star,  to now become your project.
